SOMETHING YOU CAN DO

There’s a new book out called The Secret that states that you can make things happen by thinking positive thoughts. Didn’t Peter Pan tell that to Wendy to help her to fly? No, I’m not asking you to fly, but I do want you to think positive thoughts about getting the sand spread around the pond in a timely manner. No negative thoughts, only good positive ones.
I have written to Hal O. Adkins, Director or Public Works for the Town of Ocean City, asking him to meet with Roman Jesien, PhD, Maryland Coastal Bays Program and yours truly, Vera, sometime this week to plan a stratagy for the sand placement. Until the sand is in place we can’t plan anything about planting the new shoreline. Belive me it does take planning and cooridinaton to bring people together to do this. We don’t want to miss the planting season again this year. The plants on the Oyster shoreline went in at the very end of the season. If we had waited even one more week the plants would not have been available. It looks Good!
Sometimes people truly amaze me! Yesterday a man and three very little girls were standing on the new shoreline throwing those big stones in the water. That is not a beach for walking, although he told me it was. Remember, the sand is not compacted, infact there are some very soft spots that will take your shoes if you aren’t careful. The man told me that the beach was made for walking and that there was nothing wrong with throwing the stones in the water. He certainly wasn’t setting a good example for those children.
Somehow we need to educate our visitors about this pond and all of us must be the educators. If you have any ideas of how we can do this please email me. 1vm.mccullough@verizon.net

The diminishing flock
This may be your last chance to take pictures of the Canvasbacks before they head off to some cooler place. Look at the dates on the pictures, which were taken about a month apart. Our critters don’t lie…it really is going to get warmer.
We are doing our very best to work with the Town of Ocean City to get the sand, which is stockpiled in the park, spread along the Bahia side of the pond. Please be patient with all of us.

Winter….I’ll be glad to see you go!!
I woke up this morning to the sound of a snowplow cleaning the street. It was still snowing when we (Franki, my dog, sleeps with me) went to bed. Snow was already covering everything. There’s a street light directly across from my bedroom window and no matter how I adjust the shades it manages to stream into my room. With the help of the snow the room was bright as day so I pulled a pillow over my head. I woke up with the pillow still shutting out the light. Strange experience, at first I thought maybe the snow had covered the widows making the room dark. When I shook of the pillow the sun was streaming into the room. I was so relieved that I immediately got out of bed and looked out the window to one of the most beautiful sights; the birds were flying in, the pond was frozen and there was neatest snowplow job ever. I just knew it was going to be a good day.
I’m hoping this was winter’s last gottcha! I’m so ready for spring! I know you must be ready for some other views then that from my bedroom window.
